Police Say Peterson Was Always a Suspect

MODESTO, Calif. - Investigators looking for Laci Peterson (news - web sites) after she vanished Christmas Eve say they focused on her husband from the start. They searched his home, monitored his movements and tried to debunk his alibi — that he was fishing at the Berkeley Marina when his pregnant wife was last seen alive.

"We haven't been able to eliminate him for a long while," Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden said. "You look to eliminate possibilities and that's what we kept doing and Scott could just never be eliminated."

Scott Peterson (news - web sites), 30, is now in custody, likely facing double murder charges, after DNA tests identified bodies found about three miles from the marina as 27-year-old Laci Peterson and her infant son, his umbilical cord still attached.

Police had pursued nearly 10,000 tips, and looked at parolees and convicted sex offenders as possible suspects, but they kept returning to one person: Scott Peterson.

The fact that no credible information was ever received on tip lines — even when the award was boosted to $500,000 — also kept investigators focused on Scott.

"Had anyone known about where Laci was, had any information about where she was and if she was alive, we would have heard about it," Wasden said.

On Friday, hours before the DNA test results were announced, plainclothes agents who had been tracking Scott Peterson with phone taps and vehicle sensors pulled him over in the San Diego area and arrested him.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer said they feared Scott Peterson might try to flee. His dark hair had been bleached blond and he had a beard.

He was booked into the Stanislaus County jail late Friday and is expected to be arraigned Monday or Tuesday on two counts of capital murder. District Attorney Jim Brazelton didn't say if he would seek the death penalty.

Peterson's attorney, Kirk McAllister, did not return telephone calls seeking comment Saturday.

Police have refused to describe the evidence they have against Peterson or say how Laci died. Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden said it appeared she was killed the day before Christmas because no "credible witness" saw or heard from her after that.

On Saturday morning, Modesto residents showed up with flowers, candles and Easter bunnies in front of Scott and Laci Peterson's home. Some children brought their toys for Laci's child, whom she had named Connor. Others stood with their families and prayed.

As Michelle McKinney watched her 12-year-old son place a blue and gold teddy bear in front of the house, she wiped away tears.

"The baby didn't get a chance to live his life and grow up," said McKinney, 33, clutching her 10-year-old daughter. "She didn't get a chance to enjoy her baby. My children are my whole life."

Many in this central California city of 200,000 never met the 27-year-old woman with the big smile and dimples, but many felt they knew her.

A makeshift wooden cross covered with aluminum foil on the Peterson lawn reads: "We prayed everyday that Laci and Baby Connor would come home. Now, Laci and Baby Connor are home with the Lord."

Authorities have refused to speculate about a motive in the deaths.

Scott and Laci seemed like a picture-perfect couple: Family photos show them leaning in close and smiling. Friends say they never argued.

Scott and Laci met in San Luis Obispo, where he worked three jobs to put himself through college.

"The moment he was with Laci, they just beamed at each other," his mother, Jackie Peterson, told the Modesto Bee. "No one else ever made my son smile like that. They did everything right."

She refused to comment on her son's arrest. "I'm not talking until they resolve this whole thing," she told the Contra Costa Times.

The couple married in 1997 and ran a cafe in San Luis Obispo. They sold the place two years ago and moved to Modesto to be closer to her family.

After Laci became pregnant, Scott "put a lot of hours into making that baby room just right," family friend Guy Miligi told the Modesto Bee. "He was real excited about having his first child. He talked about that all the time."

For weeks, the couple's family and friends staunchly stood behind Scott Peterson.

Laci's brother, Brent Rocha, said in January that Scott loved his wife too much to ever harm her. Her friends said he was a devoted husband.

"Scott is devastated," Laci's stepfather, Ron Grantski, said in January. "I know what we're going through, but he's got double. The press is questioning him, but all he wants to do is find his wife."

Days later, Laci Peterson's family severed ties with him after learning he had an affair with another woman. They publicly called on him to help police, who labeled him "uncooperative."

After the rift with his in-laws, Scott Peterson launched his own search effort, distributing fliers in Los Angeles while searchers looked in San Francisco Bay and near Modesto.

Many of his Modesto friends began to shun him. His fellow golfers at the Del Rio Country Club quietly bought out his membership for an estimated $25,000 in cash.

He eventually moved to San Diego, his hometown.

There, he was aware of the surveillance, waved at detectives and was "being kind of a smart aleck" before Friday, said California Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

Wasden sought an arrest warrant Thursday, a day before the confirmation of the identities of the bodies, in part because he feared Peterson might flee to Mexico, which forbids the extradition of anyone who faces the death penalty.

"That was a concern," Lockyer spokesman Nathan Barankin said Saturday. "While we've improved our relationship with Mexico, extraditions, death penalty or not, can be very troublesome, expensive and tiresome."

Museum-Gate?: "Oddly enough, in light of the multiple-day extravaganza of looting of Iraqi antiquities that went on right under the nose of occupying American troops, before the war even began there were charges being slung by rabble-rousing archeologists and scientists that the United States was in cahoots with a group of wealthy art dealers to, um, liberate Iraq's historical heritage.
According to the April 6 edition of Scotland's Sunday Herald, the group American Council for Cultural Policy, which "is known to consist of a number of influential dealers who favour a relaxation of Iraq's tight restrictions on the ownership and export of antiquities . . . met with US defence and state department officials prior to the start of military action to offer its assistance in preserving the country's invaluable archaeological collections."
Meanwhile, with only three out of 32 hospitals still operable, Baghdadis are starting to hold protests seeking the return of some semblance of government.

Iraqis Rally to Demand Swift U.S. Exit
1 hour, 35 minutes ago

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

Less than 10 days after the fall of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), thousands of Iraqis marched in downtown Baghdad on Friday to demand a rapid U.S. troop withdrawal and a prominent opposition leader said he expects Americans to relinquish most government functions within weeks.

The pressure surfaced in the streets as Australian officials disclosed the discovery of dozens of Iraqi fighter jets and other heavy military hardware at an air base and American troops took custody of a leader from the old regime for the second time in as many days.

The debate over Saddam's fate was rekindled with the appearance of a videotape said to show him and an audio tape said to contain his recorded message. At the same time, an Iraqi ambassador said he believes the man who ruled Iraq (news - web sites) for nearly a quarter century is dead.

"I know his character," said Sami Sadoun, a longtime regime official who most recently has been envoy to Serbia-Montenegro. "He must have been killed, or everything would not have collapsed so quickly," he said in an interview with The Associated Press

APRIL 18th

Column One article on Cyclone
Company. " Part of the US Army's 4th
Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, came
into Iraq with 77 soldiers. Some
were barely out of boot camp.
Others had ore than a decade of
service. Some joined because there
weren't any other jobs. Others
joined because it was a family
tradition.

hey weathered a brutal 48 hour
convoy through untracked desert and
were greeted in the small Euphrates
River city of Najaf, in central
Iraq, by a withering motor attack
and snipers....

The 14 tanks of Cyclone's Company
logged an average of 800 miles and
moved farther in twodays than most
tank units did in months during WWII.
They blew up 40 tanks, 59 armored
personnel carriers, 21 artillery
pieces and more than 40 trucks, and
took 32 prisoners, according to
tentative tallies".

GREAT GOING CYCLONE COMPANY ! WE
ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU AND APPRECIATE
YOUR SACRIFICES.

Take care and keep safe.

Mideast Nations Meet on Iraq as US Threatens Syria: "
RIYADH ( Reuters ) - Middle Eastern nations were meeting on Friday to debate post-Saddam Iraq as the United States pressed on with its own plans for the war-ravaged nation.
Among eight countries at the first postwar regional forum was Syria, now under U.S. pressure for allegedly sheltering aides of Saddam Hussein and developing chemical weapons. The Riyadh meeting was hosted by Saudi Arabia to discuss the implications of the crushing U.S. victory on the region.
Foreign ministers of Iraq's neighbors Turkey, Iran, Syria, Kuwait and Jordan as well as Egypt and Bahrain were to attend. Barring Syria and Iran, all are key U.S. allies that offered some form of support for Iraq's invasion. None of these nations had any love for Saddam, whose three decades in power were ended this month by the U.S.-led war on Iraq, but now they all want a say in filling the vacuum.
Almost all Middle Eastern nations want the U.S. and British occupation to end immediately. They also want Iraqis to elect their own government -- but with help from neighboring states. In remarks carried by the Iranian news agency on Friday, President Mohammad Khatami said the role of regional countries in setting up a new Iraqi government was "very important."
And speaking to reporters in Cairo on Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara said he expected the meeting to call for maintaining Iraq's "unity, integrity and independence." "No one can guess or predict how long it will take to stabilize Iraq," he said. "But...occupation is not the right response to stability in Iraq."

Thousands at Baghdad Mosque Demand US Leave Iraq: "
BAGHDAD ( Reuters ) - Thousands of people carrying Korans and waving banners demonstrated outside a Baghdad mosque on Friday demanding the United States leave Iraq.
In the first Friday prayers since U.S. tanks drove to the heart of the Iraqi capital last week, Imam Ahmed al-Kubaisi said in his sermon the United States invaded Iraq to defend Israel and denied that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
His followers poured out of the mosque after prayers chanting anti-U.S. slogans and waving banners that read "No to America. No to Secular State. Yes to Islamic State."

Interpol sending team to help search for Iraqi antiquities: "
PARIS ( AP ) - Interpol announced Friday it is sending a special team to Iraq to help track down pillaged art treasures, joining a legion of groups worldwide offering assistance in the recovery efforts.
The international law enforcement organization called on everyone involved in the conservation and trade of antiquities "to categorically decline any offers of cultural property originating from Iraq."
The move comes as Washington said FBI agents had been dispatched to Iraq to find plundered treasures and as the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization held an urgent meeting in Paris on restoring Iraq's cultural heritage. Interpol said in a statement that it planned a special gathering May 5-6 to devise strategies for recovering the thousands of objects stolen from Baghdad's Iraq National Museum and other institutions nationwide.
The meeting is to bring together officials from UNESCO, the International Council of Museums and the World Customs Organization, among others. While the pillage at first appeared to be a spontaneous frenzy unleashed by the fall of Baghdad, experts now believe some looters were highly organized professionals aiming to feed clandestine networks.
The Interpol statement said a special team of senior officers would go to Kuwait and other countries in the region later this month seeking information from governments and police on what had been stolen. "The team will travel to Iraq as soon as this can be arranged with military officials," the statement said.
Interpol has already alerted police in its 181 member countries to make sure that everyone from border guards to art dealers and even the public is aware of the situation, the statement added.

Married to fear
Alternet: War On Iraq: "Respected British writer John Berger writes that the war on Iraq was marked by fear -- the blind fear of the architects of this new American Century, which in turn led to the exercise of overwhelming power: "Married as they are to Fear, they cannot come to terms with, or find a place for, death. Fear keeps death out, and so the Dead desert them. The partners of Fear are alone on this planet - as the rest of the world is not. This is why, considering all the power they wield, military and otherwise, they are dangerous. Terrifyingly dangerous. It is also why they cannot survive.""

Leaderless Iraqis Wonder Who Is in Charge
Command Post: "REUTERS Thu April 17, 2003 12:17 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Mohammed Mohsen Zubaidi says he is running Baghdad but no one seems sure with what authority.
Iraqi National Congress leader Ahmad Chalabi, head of one of the biggest Iraqi exile political groups, has arrived in the capital after decades abroad but has so far made only the blandest statements through his adviser.
And the U.S. invaders, who patrol the city's streets, are saying virtually nothing.
For Iraqis, it is a baffling change from the harsh one-party rule of Saddam Hussein. Many now simply want somebody -- whoever it is -- to take charge.
"Whether we choose it or not, we need a government," said 35-year-old Wafiq Mohammed in a crowd of Iraqis struggling to understand what the future holds.
More than a week after Baghdad fell to U.S. troops, many Iraqis are struggling to understand why Americans, so effective in war, seem to be so ineffective at peace.
Many want a government of their own people and are still somewhat skeptical about the United States' motives for the war.
